Adding a child

For parents· 3 min read

Each child you add gets a PIN, a grade, and a per-child progress view scoped to that learner.

Children live under your parent account. Each child has their own name, grade, PIN, and progress history — but they all share your phone number for sign-in (their PIN keeps each child's session distinct).

Steps

  1. From the bottom navigation, open Family.
  2. Tap Add Child in the top bar. This opens the family setup wizard — the same short flow for your first child and every one after.
  3. Learner — enter the child's display name. The first word is what they type to sign in, so it must be different from every other learner on your account; nicknames are fine. Then pick their grade: Grade 7 through Grade 10 today, with Grades 11 and 12 coming soon. The library, CEAs, and recommendations all scope to this grade automatically.
  4. School — pick from the Kenyan registry, or tap My school isn't listed / studying outside Kenya and type the name. This is required. Adding a second child keeps the school you picked for the first, so you only search once.
  5. PIN — set a 4-digit PIN. Pick something memorable but not something a sibling could guess.
  6. Review — check the details and confirm. Nothing is saved until this step, so closing the tab part-way leaves no half-made child.

Each child is given an avatar colour automatically — blue for your first, then purple, orange and red — so there is nothing to choose, and nothing to change later.

Nothing is written until you confirm on the review step. After that the child appears in the list immediately, and the wizard offers Add another child if you have more to add. Switch between them via the active-learner pill at the top of the home screen.

What happens next

  • The child starts a 7-day full-access trial — your family's first three children each get one; children added after that start on the free plan (English + Social Studies for Junior School, English + ICT for Senior School) until the family wallet is topped up — a funded wallet puts every child on Premium automatically.
  • Your child can now sign in by entering your phone number, typing their first name, and typing the PIN you set. Learners who create their own account from the sign-up screen (with a code sent to your phone) appear here too, with the school they picked during sign-up; you get a notification when that happens. If a learner you already added tries to sign up again with your number, Keybaki sends them to sign in instead of creating a second child.
  • A child with no school shows a No school yet chip on their card (this only happens for learners created before the school step existed). Tap Pick school on the card, or open the child from the notification, to set it: search the registry, or tap Their school isn't listed / studying outside Kenya in the edit form and type the name. Until then the child is invisible to their school's rosters and teachers.
  • All CEAs your child takes are scoped to their progress, not yours or a sibling's.
  • Weak-strand recommendations are computed per child.
  • Your child's school is set at creation. If you picked a registry school they start pending there until the school confirms them — it doesn't touch their learning, only how they connect to teachers and staff. See Getting your child confirmed at school.

Common issues

  • I added the wrong grade. Edit the child from the Family screen. The change applies immediately and signs the child out, so they sign back in on the new grade.
  • "You already have a learner whose first name is ..." Two learners on one account cannot share a first name, because that is what they type to sign in. Add a middle name or a nickname to one of them.
  • My child forgot the PIN. Tap the child's PIN chip to set a new one; the old PIN stops working immediately.
  • The PIN field won't accept letters. PINs are digits only, exactly 4 of them. This keeps sign-in viable on shared tablets where toggling keyboard layouts can be friction.
